Peter Rotter: Landscape Oil Painter

Landscapes have always been the focus of his work, shaped by a lifetime spent surrounded by them. At the core of each painting is a sense of feeling, the initial spark of inspiration that guides the entire process. He is drawn to places through luminous colour, shifting light, compelling shapes, and the movement of sky and shadow, along with the memory of sound, scent, and atmosphere. These elements continue to fuel his desire to paint and define his connection to the Canadian landscape.

Northern Ontario remains his primary source of inspiration. After graduating from the Ontario College of Art in 1995, returning to paint the north felt like a natural homecoming. It is a landscape that shaped his early years through summers and weekends, and continues to influence his work today.

He recently relocated his home and studio from Toronto to Lakefield, Ontario, in the Kawarthas to be closer to that source of inspiration. He typically works from photographs taken only days before painting, allowing the experience and feeling to remain fresh. Each piece begins as a small oil sketch focused on colour and composition, which may then develop into a larger work. Painting daily is an essential part of both his practice and his well being.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0512/0072/1095/collections/5552bdc7432fe2513a90ed64_profile_pic.sm.200x200.jpg?v=1774030546
