          About Kerry Walford

Kerry Walford is an impressionistic Canadian landscape painter living in Cayuga, Ontario. She received a BFA from York University, (2006). Her medium of choice is oils, and she loves to work on large canvases in the studio and smaller studies en plein air (outside).

Her paintings reflect the joy & aliveness that she experiences while adventuring through rural Ontario. Trees and light are predominant themes in her work, which she portrays in an impressionistic & intuitive manner. Kerry’s work can be recognized by her exploration of the atmosphere, colour, and distinct textured brushwork.

          Kerry Walford's Artist Statement

The landscapes I paint are not intended to be exact records of a place. They are an invitation to remember what it feels like to be there.

My work is inspired by the quiet moments my family and I spend exploring Ontario, camping in Algonquin Park, paddling through Killarney, wandering country roads, and watching the last light of day settle across a lake or field. These experiences remind me to slow down, notice the beauty around me, and appreciate the present moment. That feeling is what I hope to preserve on canvas.

Working primarily in oils, I paint with an intuitive, impressionistic approach, using expressive brushwork, vibrant colour, and dramatic light to capture atmosphere rather than detail. I am continually drawn to the golden hour, when familiar landscapes are transformed by warmth, long shadows, and glowing skies. Although rooted in observation, each painting becomes an interpretation shaped by memory and emotion as much as by the landscape itself.

My process begins with an orange imprimatura to establish warmth before developing the composition through strong values and successive layers of colour. The finished surface celebrates visible brushwork, texture, and the energy of the painting process itself.

Influenced by artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Canada’s Group of Seven, I strive to create paintings that feel both familiar and uplifting. My hope is that each piece offers viewers a moment of peace, wonder, and connection to the natural world, reminding us to slow down, step outside, and rediscover the beauty that surrounds us every day.

My work is influenced by traditional techniques and artists. As a child, I looked to Van Gogh and the Group of Seven for inspiration. My paintings start with an orange underpainting (imprimatura) to tone the canvas, then I sketch out the composition with a focus on values. I then add various layers of colour with an emphasis on light, depth, and texture. My paintings can be recognized through my bright colours, bold brushwork (which is impressionistic with hints of pointillism), and my emphasis on light and atmospheric perspective. My work reflects my personality: playful, soft & bold at times.
