Carley McCutcheon: Canadian Oil Painter

Carley McCutcheon is a self taught artist based in Waubaushene, Ontario, whose work is deeply inspired by the Canadian landscapes and changing weather patterns of Georgian Bay. Working primarily in oil, she creates vibrant yet peaceful paintings that capture the movement, atmosphere, and expansive beauty of the Canadian landscape.

Her artistic journey began through collecting driftwood along the shores of Georgian Bay near her home. The natural lines and textures within the wood inspired her early works, where she painted vivid sunsets, water, and waves directly onto driftwood. Over time, her practice evolved toward larger canvas works, while still maintaining the organic energy and connection to nature that first shaped her style.

Growing up on her family’s maple syrup farm in Oro Medonte, alongside summers spent at a cottage on Georgian Bay, played a defining role in her artistic perspective. The smooth rocky shorelines, windswept pines, and dramatic skies of the region continue to influence her work today. Whether depicting calm waters or approaching storms, her paintings reflect both a personal connection to the landscape and an appreciation for the ever changing rhythms of nature.

In addition to her painting practice, McCutcheon has completed several large scale public sculptures through Orillia’s Streets Alive Productions street art competition, earning second place in 2017 and third place in 2021. She also works part time as a Registered Kinesiologist in Orillia, Ontario, while continuing to help her family produce and sell maple syrup at local farmers’ markets.
